Parent Connection: Resources for Gifted Students

We have created information on the topics of math, reading, writing, research, and interactive resources  to be used in the Elementary School setting.  We have attempted to reach all areas of the curriculum that we teach in our gifted classrooms.  We will be presenting these webpages to our Gifted staff and allowing them to link these pages to their webpages.

Literature Suggestions for Gifted & Talented Students
L: Lexile Level         RL: Reading Level              IL: Interest Level

"Reading Instruction With Gifted and Talented Readers" by Patricia F. Woods encourages bibliotherapy which provides literature for the social and emotional needs needs of students. High level discussions and opportunities for critical/analytical and creativity reading activities are strategies that challenge high ability learners. Students should be encouraged to make inferences, analyze text and understand elements of literature.

"Gifted Students and Reading Instruction: What is the Best Strategy" by Anne Vize explains it can be a challenge to provide appropriate reading materials for the gifted learner because they are able to read text that is beyond their years and experiences. Teachers and parents can find out what their reading level is but should pay close attention to the content to make sure it's appropriate for the students.

Gunning (1992) provided an excellent summary of the characteristics of a model program for gifted reader:

To grow intellectually, gifted students need challenging books. They need fiction with complex plots and carefully developed characters, and informational books that explore topics in depth. They should read books and periodicals that spark their imaginations, broaden their horizons, and cause them to wonder and question.

Books include the gifted framework of the Omaha Public Schools. The framework includes social emotional development, problem solving, critical/analytical thinking, creativity, and research.
